Introduction
These images were produced during the final semester of the Master's program. They represent my interpretation of the queer normative frame—a sort of golden ghetto where fluidity in gender, sexuality, and camp aesthetics can openly and freely coexist. Additionally, they reflect the idea of glorifying queer history and the ongoing quest to create a visible, tangible queer past.
Context
I was particularly interested in the role of linguistics and how the emergence of new terminology has contributed to social change. Today, homonormative culture possesses its own language—although it is more accurately described as a playful, semiotic distortion of the English language rather than a fully distinct language. Examples include: gagging, no tea, no shade, girlfriend, twins, condragulations, sickening, etc. What began as subcultural slang has now entered mainstream discourse and is widely understood and used.
Approach
To illustrate this ideological shift, I chose to work with materials associated with camp aesthetics, such as pearls, fishnets, gold, marble, and rubies. These luxurious materials carry historical weight. For example, in the Russian Imperial Court, traditional garments were adorned with semi-precious stones and pearls. Similarly, marble and gold have long symbolised extravagance and excessive wealth. I also incorporated symbols historically associated with the gay community, including the morning star, the pink triangle, the snake, the scorpion, the HIV ribbon, and the ram.
Process
A key part of this semester's work involved the creation of jewellery objects. Additionally, the lighting setup evolved, becoming more constrained and focused, thereby emphasizing specific areas of the images. I also digitally transformed previous 3D meshes by breaking them apart to convey a sense of decay, erosion, and historical depth.
Summary
The final semester focused on presenting these images in a new, more contemporary setting—reframing the aesthetic and ideological narratives developed throughout the research.
